New for 2019:

The METG Masterclass Teacher Workshops

Every year, the METG offers a masterclass led by an expert in the field of theater and/or education. Our work as theater teachers requires us to continually grow and learn, and these masterclasses provide exciting opportunities to hone our craft. Whether focusing on stage combat, improvisation, diversity in the classroom, or devised theater, these masterclasses are an ideal way to gain new skills, make new connections, and take that next step in your development as an artist and a teacher.

The Masterclass is divided into two five-hour sessions, one on December 14th, 2018 at the Center for the Arts in Natick, and one on April 12th, 2019, at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts, also in Natick. Each session will begin with registration at 9:00 am, and run to 3:00 pm, with lunch provided as part of the cost of the workshop.

If you take both sessions, the 10 aggregate hours can be eligible for PDPs.

This Year’s Masterclass: Seeing What’s There: Creating Indelible Images Onstage Led by Dan Safer, professor of theater at MIT

This masterclass will focus on methods of devising theater focused on images: images drawn from text, images drawn from sound, images drawn from any source of inspiration. We will work as choreographers, as designers, as sculptors, as we challenge the visual limits of the theater. This workshop is ideal for any director looking to invigorate their usual practice and go beyond the basic, and for any teacher looking for ways to get their students to think outside the box.

Workshop participants will:

- Create scenes, dances, and images based on theatrical and non-theatrical texts
- Learn warmups, exercises, games, and feedback techniques that can help students generate new ideas in class and rehearsal
- Practice integrating this image work into their curriculum or rehearsal calendar

He taught at NYU for nearly two decades, and has also taught at Princeton, Columbia, Juilliard, and the Norwegian Theater Academy. He also once choreographed the Queen of Thailand’s birthday party.

Taking one of the two sessions, either December or April, costs $150 for METG members and $200 for non-members. Taking both of the sessions costs $275 for members, and $400 for non-members.
