The Festival will allow students to see a variety of theatre performances, interact with other students with similar interests and learn what other schools are doing in drama. All schools will receive either a gold, silver, or bronze medal based upon their standing.  Other awards will be given for the best of each performance in acting and technical work done by students.  The two judges will provide a written critique to each performing school.

Since its inception in 1992,  the MHSDG has awarded $68,000 to 115 college-bound students.    The applicant will select a scene from a published play of his or her  choosing and design a set for that choice. The applicant’s design  concept must be original and its rendering must be exclusively his or  her own work. Judging will be based on the quality of the design’s  concept and execution and its appropriateness to the selected play.    Design applicants will present their entries in person on the day of  the scholarship competition. Judges will interview design applicants

DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_356" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="   "][/caption]    Calling all student costumers!  The METG invites any Massachusetts  student to submit a series of original costume designs for this year’s  contest.    Any Massachusetts student in grades 9-12 is eligible for the design contest. The rules are simple:     The applicant’s design concept must be original and its rendering must be exclusively his or her own work.   Designs are to be illustrated on 11″ x 17″ paper in color using the medium of your choice.   Submit on costume design for each of (4) four separate characters  that appear in one scene/act of a play of your choice. Designs may have a  clear overlay to show coat or outerwear.   Designs should have actual swatches of fabric to be used in making the costume.   Designer should be able to explain why he/she chose the design and color for the particular scene.

DESCRIPTION:    [caption id="attachment_276" align="alignleft" width="279" caption="  "][/caption]    Doug Ingalls Acting Scholarships    To recognize the talents of college-bound high school seniors and  reward their excellence in performance, the METG will award scholarships  to eligible high school seniors based on talent demonstrated in an  acting audition. Since its inception in 1992, the METG has awarded  $68,000 to 115 college-bound students.    The emphasis during the auditions is on presentation and performance.  Each applicant must perform two contrasting pieces, not to exceed a  total time limit of four minutes. Before each audition, the applicant  will be allowed to set the stage; one straight-backed chair and one  small table will be provided. No additional set pieces or sound will be  permitted. Costumes and props are not permitted. Applicants should wear  simple clothing that allows for ease of movement. No special lighting  will be available.    Winners perform their pieces at the Massachusetts State Drama Festival in March where they receive their awards.

SUMMARY:Teacher Workshop - Something to Say: Playmaking
DESCRIPTION:Playmaking  is a powerful tool for facilitating students' learning, about theatre,  themselves,curriculum and the world. This workshop offers an accessible  structure for developing original material with students across all  grade levels, and identifies strategies for integrating curriculum  topics and playmaking, as well as social, personal, and societal  exploration.    Workshop  instructor Bethany Nelson  is a faculty member in Theatre Education at  Emerson College, teaching methods classes in theatre, drama, playmaking  and multicultural education. An educator and teaching artist for 25  years, Ms. Nelson has worked as a drama specialist in schools consulting  in the use of drama as a curriculum tool. She has a M.Ed. from Harvard  University Graduate School of Education and is currently pursuing her  Ph.D. in Arts &amp; Education at the University of Warwick in Leicester,  England. She has published research examining the efficacy of  playmaking and process drama in urban classrooms.

The   festival includes 115 one-act plays produced by member high schools.  The  competition is organized on three levels – preliminary, semi-final  and  state. Student excellence in acting and technical design is  recognized  at each level, including the selection of an All-Star  Company at the  finals. The fourteen finalist plays are featured over the three days at the Back Bay Events Center in Boston.
